Scarborough Archers was formed over 70 years ago in May 1934.

Our current chairman, Roger Greaves, recently located an article from the Scarborough Evening News from the 9th May 1934 regarding the forming of the Scarborough Archers club. (The article can be viewed on the right of this page and click on the image for closer inspection.)
The meeting at which the club was formed was held in Rowntree's Cafe, Westborough, Scarborough, on the 8th May 1934, under the chairmanship of Mr J. W. Butler. The formation of an archery club was discussed and it was eventually decided that the club be formed locally and be known as the Scarborough Archers.
At the start of the meeting the chairman stated that the meeting was primarily due to Dr Rhodes.
He believed archery was a good sport and physical form of exercise.
Dr Rhodes said that he had come up with the idea of the club three years previously and that it was fresh and different.
Scarborough was the first town to have municipal archery butts and judging by the number of arrows shot during the two years they had been in existence, archery was going to be very popular.

The Burniston Road Sports Ground was available to them and it was proposed that they would pay rent to use the facility.

Scarborough Archers has had a few homes over the years including: the Oriel Cricket Ground, farmland which is now the site of Raincliffe School, North Cliff (where Atlantis stood), Scarborough College and our current home at McCain's Sports Ground on Osgodby Lane.

After the war the club was re-started with Jack Flinton taking over the running of the club.
Jack was extremely dedicated and shot right up until the age of 82. He also received the Grand National Archery Society's Bronze Award for his services to the sport.
